PUBLIC NOTICE OF MUNICIPAL CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION

Notice is hereby given by the Warren Municipal Civil Service Commission of the written competitive open examination to be held on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. at the Warren G. Harding Cafeteria, 860 Elm Road, Warren, Ohio, for the position of Firefighter in the Warren City Fire Department.

The examination will consist of two parts: written and physical agility. The physical agility portion of the examination shall not be applicable to an applicant unless the applicant passes the written portion of the examination. As and for the physical agility portion of the examination, no person shall be eligible for appointment to the entrance-level position of Firefighter within the Fire Department of the City of warren unless that person is then the holder of a current and valid certificate of successful completion of either the Firefighters Physical Agility Test issued by Cuyahoga Community College or the International Association of Fire Fighters endorsed Candidate Physical Agility Test. There may be a fee to take such agility test, for which the applicant will be responsible. Detailed information on the physical agility portion of the examination will accompany each application blank.

QUALIFICATIONS: (At the time of examination)

(1)    Must be citizen of the United States of America, or have legally declared his/her intention of becoming so.

(2)    Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age, but no more than thirty-five (35) years of age.

NOTE: Despite the aforementioned ages for examination, no person, regardless of his/her results on this examination, shall be eligible to receive an original appointment to the position of Firefighter unless that person is at least (18) years of age and no more than thirty-five (35) years of age.

(3)    Must be a High School Graduate or have a G. E .D.

(4)    Must possess a valid driver's license.

QUALIFICATIONS: (At the time of appointment)

(1)    Must be a holder of an operative and valid Paramedic Certificate from the State of Ohio.

Passing grade for the written portion of the examination has been established at 70%.

Application blanks may be obtained at Warren City Hall, 391 Mahoning Ave., at either the Safety Service Director's Office or the Human Resources Department. Application blanks may also be obtained at the Warren Fire Department, 111 South Street.

IMPORTANT:  Applications for the examination, completely filled out and notarized, may only be filed at the Warren Fire Department, 111 South Street, Warren Ohio 44483, on Saturday, December 4 and 11, 2010, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 (noon).  NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE CLOSING DATE OF DECEMBER 11, 2010.

 

  

ADDITIONAL CREDITS ALLOWED FOR THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION

 

1.                  Any veteran, resident of Ohio, who has served more than 180 days of consecutive duty in the Armed Forces and has received an honorable discharge, will receive an additional credit of 20% of his/her total score on the written examination after receiving a passing grade on that examination.

 

2.                  Anyone who is a holder of a valid certificate for the completion of the 240 hour Ohio Basic Fire School (or the equivalent thereof issued by a proper agency of another state) shall receive additional credit of 20% of his/her total score given in the written examination in which he/she received a passing grade.

 

3.                  Any person who has completed at least 2,704 hours of employment as a Firefighter for a State(s) and/or any political sub-division(s) of a State shall receive additional credit of 20% of his/her total score given in the written examination in which he/she receives a passing grade.

 

4.                  Anyone who has received from an accredited college or university an associate degree, or equivalent, including at least twenty (20) quarter units or thirteen (13) semester units of fire science courses shall  receive additional credit of 10% of his/her total score given in the written examination in which he/she receives a passing grade. TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE PROVIDED AT THE TIME APPLICATION FOR EXAMINATION.

 

5.                  Anyone who has graduated from an accredited college or university with at least a baccalaureate degree, including at least forty-five (45) quarter units or thirty (30) semester units of fire science courses, shall receive  an additional credit of 20% of his/her total score on the written examination after receiving a passing grade on that examination. A person receiving credit pursuant to this paragraph 5 shall not also receive any additional credit pursuant to the preceding paragraph 4. TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE PROVIDED AS NOTED IN PARAGRAPH 4.

 

NOTE:  Regardless of the credit provided for above, no person shall be entitled to, and no person shall receive, any additional credit totaling in excess of 20% of his/her total passing score on the written examination. (20% of a passing score shall be the maximum combined bonus points or credits that one person may earn on this written examination).

 

Any credits provided for above must be applied for, and must be adequately verified, at the time of application for examination.  NO VERIFICATION FOR CREDIT CAN BE APPLIED FOR AFTER AN APPLICANT HAS FILED HIS/HER APPLICATION.
