This program is available to children under the age of 21 who have a chronic, treatable medical condition, and are under the care of a BCMH-approved physician. Public Health nurses act as a liaison for these families, linking them to various services in the community and assisting them with problem solving. For further information please contact the Public Health Clinic and ask for the BCMH nurse.

HEAD CHECK (LICE) PROGRAM

Head lice are small, wingless insects that live and breed in human hair. The eggs, which are called nits, are firmly attached to the hair shaft close to the scalp and are usually found behind the ears and at the back of the head.

Head lice are contagious. They spread through sharing of personal items      such as hats, combs and brushes and by close contact with other children.

Itching is a sign that a child may have head lice. Parents should inspect their child’s head frequently. Nits are about the size and shape of a sesame        seed and are firmly attached to the hair shaft. The adult louse is not         always seen, since it tends to avoid light.

Several over-the-counter products are available for the treatment of head lice.  ALL family members should be inspected and treated if necessary. Nits must be removed. Bedding and recently worn clothing, coats and hats must be thoroughly washed and dried.  Personal items such as combs, brushes and hair accessories may be soaked in hot water mixed with a little of the preparation used on the child’s hair. Vacuum all furniture and carpets thoroughly.

Head checks for children who have been treated for head lice are available daily at the public health clinic between the hours of 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM for Warren City residents ONLY.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (STD) PROGRAM

The Warren City Health District is responsible for tracing and assuring the appropriate follow-up treatment for all cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) within Trumbull County.

A clinic is held weekly for the testing, counseling and treatment of three specific STDs: syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. Doctors are available for testing and counseling, but an appointment is required for all clients. Confidentiality is maintained at all times. Treatment is administered the same day as testing. Please call for further information and/or to schedule an appointment.

DENTAL SEALANT PROGRAM

This program has operated since 1996 through a grant from the Ohio Department of Health's Bureau of Oral Health Services.

The Health Department offers the dental sealant program to children in elementary schools in the Warren City, Brookfield, Bloomfield/Mesopotamia, Niles, Windham, Ravenna and La Brae school districts. This program helps prevents tooth decay through the use of dental sealants. Sealants are thin plastic coatings, which are placed on the chewing areas of the child’s permanent molars in order to seal out germs that cause decay.

Both second and sixth grade students are eligible for the program and are presented with an overview of the process, shown an animated video, and given application forms along with information explaining the program to take home to their parents. Forms must be signed and returned to the classroom teacher for the child to be eligible to participate.

Students with permission slips are examined by the dentist and those who require dental work are referred to their family dentist. Dental hygienists then apply the sealants to the permanent molars. Children are checked one year later to ensure that the sealants are still in place.
