Head lice are small, wingless insects that live and breed in human hair. The eggs, which are called nits, are firmly attached to the hair shaft close to the scalp and are usually found behind the ears and at the back of the head.

Head lice are contagious. They spread through sharing of personal items such as hats, combs and brushes and by close contact with other children.

Itching is a sign that a child may have head lice. Parents should inspect their child’s head frequently. Nits are about the size and shape of a sesame seed and are firmly attached to the hair shaft. The adult louse is not always seen, since it tends to avoid light.

Several over-the-counter products are available for the treatment of head lice. ALL family members should be inspected and treated if necessary. Nits must be removed. Bedding and recently worn clothing, coats and hats must be thoroughly washed and dried. Personal items such as combs, brushes and hair accessories may be soaked in hot water mixed with a little of the preparation used on the child’s hair. Vacuum all furniture and carpets thoroughly.
